Where world class sand and surf meet British colonial relics
As one of the oldest European-founded settlements in the Americas, San Juan offers an interesting juxtaposition of modern flare and authentic old world feel, where its brightly painted houses cozy up beside ancient colonial artifacts. In St. Croix, rainforests, a coastal plane and beautiful mountains offer up a healthy biodiversity that visitors reap in the form of spectacular scuba diving and snorkeling at the famous Buck Island. You can also take some time to see Christiansted's well preserved Danish architecture or lounge on a three-mile long beach home to nesting turtles and seabirds.
Owing to its somewhat checkered past, St. Lucia boasts both French and British influences and its famous twin peaks are among the most startling geological formations in the world. St John's Antigua is a window into a British colonial past, where a restored working dockyard and original colonial buildings cozy up to incredible sand and surf. This historical charm persists in Bridgetown Barbados, where waterfront walkways bustle with calypso music and reefs teeming with fish meet beaches full of eager sun seekers.
For a little extra
Optional activities abound on the southern isles, from Safari-rigged Land Rovers that ferry you through Barbados to tours of the Cruzan Rum factory that will leave you feeling just a touch lighter. In St Croix, meander through old sugar plantations or embark on a hike through the island's rainforest, sample a trendy French restaurant in St. Maarten, or take a catamaran out to sea in Antigua. In San Juan you'll have plenty of time to ride to San Felipe El Morro, the most dramatic of all the city's military fortifications, or visit the beautiful gardens.
