Sir Samuel Hughes, the charismatic and controversial Canadian militia minister during World War I, was undoubtedly in dire need of a tranquil reprieve near the end of his much-scrutinized career. Fittingly, he built his estate, a 10-bedroom mansion of stone and timbre, in 1910 right on the coast of Haliburton's Eagle Lake, far removed from the stresses of post-war society. The property has long since changed hands and been fleshed out into the even larger Sir Sam's Inn, a cottage-country resort popular with couples and families that still embraces nature as it did upon its creation.
Your Accommodations
Your accommodations still hint at regal beginnings, with antique wood beams and a lofty stone fireplace greeting you upon arrival. Your Northwoods Room mixes modern tastes with elements of tradition, outfitted with duvets to ensconce yourself in after a rigorous day on the slopes. Curl up in the welcoming arms of a vintage chair in the company of your toasty, wood-burning fireplace, and look out over the snow-covered lake through enormous windows. Downstairs is the Twin Fires dining room, where guests are served hearty morning breakfasts and upscale dinner menus that change every evening.
Amenities
Relaxation is a given at the WaterSpa, where a variety of traditional spa services are offered alongside a unique WaterSpa Circuit. It begins with a soak in the facility's unique circular pool, where jets roll over the neck and lower back and a central island administers reflexology on the feet and calves. The experience is rounded out with a foray into the bubbling Air Lounge, Champagne Grotto and a Balinese bed rest. Elsewhere on the inn property, you'll also have full access to the fitness studio and sauna. After a brisk day romping through the wilderness, take a moment to lounge in the heated outdoor pool while the sun begins its descent beneath the horizon and snowflakes drift lazily through the air.
Activities
Inhale the crisp, fresh winter air and battle back against your instincts for hibernation in the effervescent Haliburton Highlands. Glide along cross-country ski paths that snake through the thick woods of cottage country or try a higher velocity outing at Sir Sam's Ski & Bike, the perfect place to collect your adrenaline fix whether you are new to the art of downhill skiing or a seasoned practitioner of the sport.
