Mayan jungles hold much more than mystery and cultural legacies. They are also home to undulating greens so appealing that they caught the eye of renowned golf architect Robert Trent Jones II, who carved 27 holes into the deepest part of a limestone quarry in the heart of Riviera Maya. The Riviera Maya Golf Club has an 18-hole championship course that weaves through the heart of a tropical forest, where shimmering lakes echo the beauty of the famous Mexican beaches waiting nearby.

 

Rocks and water conspire to challenge golfers on this 7,272 yard course, where all skills levels are considered, and a wide variety of bunkers and water holes rest alongside the local flowers and trees. For a more relaxing spree, the 9-hole course plays amidst a variety of wild animals like ducks and wild turkeys, and a huge driving range area of more than 300 yards is available as well.


Off the Greens


Diving into the crystal waters that surround the Gran Bahia Principe Akumal is always a foremost temptation after a day on the greens. You can relax on the beach or grab a snorkel to explore the colourful fish that call these cerulean waters home, or kayaking and sailing are available if you wish to venture further from the shoreline. Motorized water sports and windsurfing lessons are available for an additional cost, or you can rely on an old all-inclusive favourite and seek solace in one of the several pools (including a river style pool and an on-site dolphin habitat!)

Tennis courts, bicycle rentals, a pool table and a gym round out a list of active options for those who wish to stay dry, or the whirlpool, swim-up bar and spa are perfect for relaxing after a day full of steady swings. Try a Hot Stone Massage or a Mayan Chocolate Dream before heading off the resort to explore famous Mayan ruins, or indulging in a night out at the resort's disco.

An international buffet is available in the resort's main restaurant, and a la carte dining options include Chicken Cordon Bleu at the Gourmet Arlequin restaurant, grilled seafood at the Frutos del Mar Seafood restaurant, or an array of classic Italian entrees. There are seven bars sprinkled throughout the resort to ensure refreshment wherever you are, or a bottle of tequila and mini-bar wait patiently in the air-conditioned rooms with a satellite TV and a pair of comfortable slippers.
