Phoenix, Arizona and the surrounding townships are somewhat of a mystery; famous for their scorching climes and arid, desert landscapes, yet celebrated for the lush, world class golf greens that manage to thrive in this seemingly waterless world. This metropolitan mecca of the American southwest has long been a retreat for heat seekers, and the dude ranches of the past have transformed into luxury spas, hotels and golf resorts that rest just outside of Phoenix in the more tranquil township of Scottsdale.
Among these world class golf courses is Longbow, a Golfweek Top 20 course where cacti and other desert vegetation scenically line the soft sand bunkers and rolling hills punched out against the dramatic mountain peaks of Arizona. Talking Stick Golf Club brings convention to the Sonoran Desert, where traditional tree lined fairways and an elegant 26,000 square foot clubhouse rest contentedly in a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, while the Pointe Golf Club alters temper mid-course as it begins to twist up the Lookout mountainside for impressive and challenging elevation changes.
Off the Greens
Nothing complements the Arizona climate (and the 300 days of sunshine it receives each year) better than an outdoor pool. Lounge poolside at the Hyatt House and soak up this state's famous rays, or dive in and refresh yourself after a day on the greens. If you want to take advantage of the weather in other ways, search out nearby Camelback Mountain for an unforgettable hike through sheer red sandstone cliffs.

Enjoy the bistro menu and premium drink selection at H Bar, take advantage of the freshly prepared salads and sandwiches at the Guest Market, or grill a steak on the outdoor barbeque courtesy of the complimentary grocery shopping service. Alternately, a host of nearby restaurants offer authentic southwestern cuisine - think chili con carne, enchiladas or rattlesnake fillet for the brave - or you can seek out chain favourites like PF Chang's.
For additional activities, the art galleries and specialty shops of Old Scottsdale are definitely worth exploring where you can pick up a hand-woven Navajo rug, and the nearby Desert Botanical Garden offers a great introduction to the Sonoran Dessert.
