More about your Jaunt

Peru is a country of epic scenery, where llamas graze in the shadow of forgotten temples and smoke crawls forward from volcanic peaks, shrouding the land of ancient Inca warriors. Prehistory dominates Peru's relic ridden landscape, while woven ponchos colour Andean dancers as they perform the Marinera and secure space for current customs in the discourse of migrant mountain passes and coastal deserts.

Day 1 - Depart to Lima: Arrive after dusk fall in Peru's capital city, eyes alight with enthusiastic anticipation as your transfer to the hotel brings you through its Old World-meets-modern-metropolis avenues. Catch glimpses of the enchanting Spanish colonial architecture and make mental notes of which streets of the "City of Kings" you'll be eager to peruse later in your tour.

Day 2 - Lima: Discover the vibrant history of Peru with a morning foray to the National Museum of Archaeology, Anthropology and History of Peru. Wander the hallways of a building steeped deeply in the foundations of the country, once playing home to two heroes of the revolution. Marvel at the extensive collection of Paracas textiles, elaborately designed shrouds crafted by natives of the land before the rise of the Aztecs and Incas. A fascinating introduction to the rest of your tour, prepare to be whisked away to continue your journey in Arequipa. B/L/D

Day 3 - Arequipa: Roll out of bed and into a guided tour of the largest city in the Andes, sprawled at the foot of El Misto, an enormous volcano with a frosted peak that exhales puffs of steam. Press your palms against sillar, the cool, pearl-coloured volcanic stone that was used to build up the city by Spanish conquistadors. Meander through the Santa Catalina Monastery, with its gorgeous and bright decor and diverting twisted hallways, you'll be wandering through one of the most engaging religious citadels in all of Peru. B/L/D

Day 4 - Colca Canyon: Your adventure continues through the epicentre of the Peruvian Andes, providing you with a full day of sights you may be at a loss to describe afterward. Ogle at Colca Canyon, overrun with lush greenery and over twice as deep as the Grand Canyon, and spend your afternoon lazing in the naturally heated thermal baths at La Calera. B/L/D

Day 5 - Chivay: You will spend your morning drifting easy along the Colca River, en route to admire the soaring and swooping aerial acrobatics of the Andean Condor, a national symbol of the country. B/L/D

Day 6 - Puno, Lake Titicaca: Gliding over the resplendent and glistening waters of the highest navigable lake in the world, you'll be overwhelmed by the sight of the stoic mountain range that envelopes you. Lake Titicaca houses manmade islands composed of totora reeds, where a host of unique customs collides with modern tourism as ancient Incan traditions still abound. Sample rustic, traditional Incan fare on the island of Taquile before boating back to Puno, a city thrumming with its own distinct rhythm. B/L/D

Day 7 - Puno to Cuzco: En route to the historical capital of Peru, traverse through the perfect segue of arcane relics and fascinating timeworn burial grounds. Promenade between archeological curiosities in an Incan compound before arriving in the exquisite stronghold of Cuzco. B/L/D

Day 8 - Cuzco: Cusco is the oldest continuously inhabited city in the Western Hemisphere, where Andean and Spanish cultures coexist in the cobblestone streets flooded with colourful folk dancers and ancient relics. Brush against the white stone walls of Santo Domingo Convent - an important place of worship - then visit the cathedrals of the copper-roofed Main Square and the military stronghold of Sacsayhuaman Fortress. Wind down after your exhilarating day with a scrumptious Peruvian meal and a brilliant spectacle.

Day 9 - Cuzco to Sacred Valley: Traipse through the majestic ruins of two ancient Incan fortresses, and enjoy a breath of fresh local extravagance at a lively public market as you head to Peru's Sacred Valley. B/L/D

Day 10 - Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu: Today is devoted to exploring Machu Picchu - a South American mecca perched nearly 8,000 feet above sea level. Discovered in 1911, this "Lost City of the Incas" is the best known archaeological site on the continent, where emerald stained rocks rise above the ancient stone city. After a scenic train ride, explore these mythical ruins with a knowledgeable tour guide. B/L/D

Day 11 - Lima:  Lima is where the Peruvian arts live - in its stately museums, edgy art installations and baroque churches. Visit the cream coloured Plaza Mayor and the twin spires of the San Francisco Church before ogling the affluent residents that occupy the shopping districts of Miraflores and San Isidrol. B/L
